Saving Earth

For James

Prologue

Roswell, NM. July 8, 1947

Twenty minutes too late! Can you imagine? The entire area where the spacecraft crashed has been cordoned off. It's like a scene from a late 1930s science fiction movie! Bright lights, cops, military, journalists, suspicious looking men in black suits, suspense. This could have been the greatest story ever told. If only I got a hold of the rancher. But Mac Brazel was nowhere to be found...

Moon Base Luna Alpha One.

Mission Commander. Personal logbook. June 29, 2378 (Ancestral Time System).

I am a third generation scientist here on the Moon. There are twenty five thousand of us. We are the only humans in the entire universe, although our ancestors would probably call us "trans-human".

Here on the Moon we outlived the humanity which was obliterated in three consecutive atomic wars in the 2020s.

We can see the earthrise, but the Earth we see is not the blue-green planet our grandparents watched rising when they first came here in the year 2018. The planet we see is a dead, scorched, inhabitable sphere that resembles Mars rather than the image I remember seeing on my father's personal computer.

As a child I always wondered what life must have been like on Earth. I visited the Gaia Park as often as I could, but I was never sure that the holographic images we created at the touch of a button were what the Earth was really like before the destruction. You could immerse yourself in any landscape with all its scents and sounds, temperature and precipitation for the most authentic earth experience. And yet, I was never fully satisfied. I always wanted more.

This is why I decided to develop the time travel technology. I wanted to go back to the world my grandparents loved so much.

Like every child at Luna Alpha One I studied the old masters. They had so many interesting concepts, but they seemed to never agree on anything. Out of hubris they would dismiss the truth in order to uphold their own faulty theories. Can you imagine that they would kill those who disagreed with them? And yet, not even one of them ever came close to the Truth. At their evolutionary level none of them would comprehend it anyway.

Discord seemed to permeate all aspects of human existence. They were so rich and yet, so poor. Maybe it was their fear of dying that made them so hostile, so belligerent, so hateful.

I remember reading my grandmother's diary. Since the young age she was terrified of getting old. In the 1990s she studied human genetics and the orthomolecular medicine. She hoped to discover the Fountain of Youth. She made some progress when she stumbled upon the telomerase research. With this knowledge she was able to considerably slow down the aging process, but was not fully satisfied. The real breakthrough came when she met my grandfather. They combined her research with his progressive nano-technology. Together they were able to extend the lifespan of existing humans to 140 years, but the embryos they created were immortal.

We are the new humans. We grow older, but we do not really age. Senescence is unknown to us. And we do not die. Those who wish may withdraw from life and enter the state of Permanent Awe, but most of us prefer to remain active for hundreds of years. There is simply too much to do in this vast universe.

We can synthesize our own nutrition accordingly to our individual needs and are able to monitor our somatic processes. Nano robots are mobilized to repair any damage to a tissue or an organ, and we can upload the latest longevity software into our mitochondria.

We live in our trans-human paradise and no one even thinks of changing the way we coexist. We do not use money and consider material possessions meaningless.

The only wealth we care about is our knowledge. Although any of us can upload any information to our brains, the real wealth comes from our ability to use that data. Unlike our human ancestors we use our knowledge to create, not to destroy.

It is difficult to imagine that most of them believed they were alone in the universe. Those who considered that there was life in the outer space believed that contact was impossible with the technology they possessed. What they did not understand was that it was their mindset and not the lack of technology that prevented them from making a connection with what they called non-human entities.

I look out and see Earth. It must have been such a lovely planet once. Pity, really. But maybe not all is lost. If my mission is successful we may be able to turn things around and prevent the disaster that destroyed all life there.

Our space-time ship is equipped with a state of the art technology. We have transformed my husband's Vega 123 vehicle. Jim designed it for our honeymoon in outer space. He even received a Moebius Prize for her! An unbelievably clever trick and a state-of-the-art technology prevents molecular disintegration upon the entry into a black hole. We named her Gaia 1, of course, and I cannot wait to board it.

We plan to land on Earth at a place called Los Alamos/35°53′28″N 106°17′52″W moments before the first atomic test on July 16, 1945. I studied the Manhattan Project materials. Some interesting stuff. Clever minds at work. But no one there seemed to understand that there were so many other uses for the nuclear power.

If I could only persuade all those involved to abandon the thoughts of destruction we could alter the flow of events on Earth...
Epilogue

Moon Base Luna Alpha One. Mission Control Center. Newsroom. July 7, 2378 (Ancestral Time System).

Something went horribly wrong! The last message that came from Gaia 1 indicated a serious change in space-time coordinates. The craft seemed to have crashed at Roswell/33°23′14″N 104°31′41″W/July 7/1947. Connection was lost after impact. We suspect that the blast at Los Alamos altered Gaia's landing coordinates. A rescue mission is being considered by the Council. Our hearts and minds are with the brave crew.

Happy World UFO Day

World UFO Day is an awareness day for science fiction aficionados to gather together and watch the skies for unidentified flying objects.

Some people celebrate the UFO Day on June 24, others on July 2. Why two different dates? June 24 is the date that the aviator Kenneth Arnold reported what is generally considered to be the first widely reported UFO sighting in the United States. July 2, on the other hand, commemorates the alleged UFO crash in the famous 1947 Roswell UFO Incident.

The beginning of July normally is a time when people of Roswell, NM, are preparing to celebrate the annual UFO Festival. Visitors from all over the world descend on this quiet desert town. Not this year, though.

The 2020 Roswell UFO Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19. Nobody is happy about this.  Local artists are desperate to keep their business alive. Everybody is struggling.

In times like these, one has to be inventive and so, the festival organizers resorted to online venues that include virtual costume contest. Popular gifts from Roswell can be bought online.

70th Anniversary Roswell UFO Festival

Sometime in July 1947 a mysterious flying object crashed in the desert of New Mexico in the vicinity of a sleepy desert town known to everybody as Roswell.

Wreckage that was recovered from the crash was brought to the Roswell Army Air Field. The local paper, the Roswell Daily Record, reported that a "flying saucer" had been captured and started the biggest UFO controversy ever recorded, or so.

The "remains" were allegedly transported to Area 51 in Nevada and the whole incident remains covered in a fog of secrecy. To this day no one really knows what was found in the desert. Was it an alien spaceship, a secret government experiment, or simply an high altitude weather balloon

Year 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of that event. Roswell expects more visitors than ever and welcomes true believers, those who want to believe, UFO aficionados, skeptics, science fiction lovers, artists, artisans, and everybody who simply wants to have some fun.

For many people UFOs are a serious business. More than thirty speakers were invited this year to discuss the challenges of alien life in Space and on Earth. Alien costume contest, laser show, concerts, Light Parade and a parallel Galacticon venue are all scheduled to take place during the celebrations that will end with fireworks on the 4th of July. All this is happening at temperatures around 100°F and is accompanied by tasty Southwestern food, spices, flavors et al.

Roswell 2015 UFO Festival

Alien eyes on a Roswell lantern by Larry Welz

We are in the middle of the Roswell UFO Festival that is celebrated every year from 3-5th July to commemorate the legendary UFO crash of 1947.

Roswell does not have much to offer to tourists and yet, every year people are coming to this sleepy Southwestern town to have some fun.

Unfortunately, from one year to another, the festival becomes a pitiful and rather boring event as if the organizers were determined to discourage people from future visits. And truly, if this was not for the UFO fame, no one would even stop here on their way to or from the Carlsbad Caverns. Roswell is one of those small American towns you pass through very quickly and hope you do not have to come back.

When we first moved to Roswell in 2009 the sight of tumbleweeds rolling dawn the road near our house was a sign of the doom that was soon to spread over Roswell like an impenetrable cosmic fog from a science fiction movie.

Roswell McDonald's mural by Larry Welz, fragment

Things changed from bad to worse over the past few years. The 55th anniversary of the UFO crash in 2012, for instance, did not even have the alien parade. You could see slightly disoriented and very disappointed tourists wandering around the town. The gift shops selling kitchy UFO-inspired gifts were dying off like flies. The artist who created beautiful murals in the city and adorned the street lanterns with alien eyes, moved out of town.

Roswell space ship shaped McDonald's restaurant

The few remaining gift stores and UFO aficionados are struggling against the dictatorship of the Roswell UFO Museum who imposes strict interpretation of events and does not tolerate creativity. And yet, there are few determined local artists who bring out original designs not seen anywhere else.

One such artist, James W. Allmon, created the unique Crashed In The Dirt Roswell T-shirt. Each shirt was dyed in the same Roswell dirt that the UFO is believed to have crashed in 1947.

The dirt used in the process is a red oxide that was dug out by James near the city of Roswell. The dyeing process that was perfected by the artist takes almost a week. Because the garment was hand dyed there are some variations in color that make the T-shirt even more attractive. A noticeable thing about the Crashed in the Dirt T-shit is that it’ll fade a bit over time, but the color never washes out completely. The Roswell dirt stays with you forever.

If you happen to visit New Mexico you may not want to waste your time on Roswell. People here are not necessarily hostile to visitors, but they do not want to be remembered as a freak town. They are very proud of their cheese factory, pecan plantations, art museum, and a few other things, but UFOs? Not really.

Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Roswell

It's not always the flying saucers that appear in the skies over Roswell. Once a year, during the first weekend of May, hot air balloon aficionados meet for the annual Old Timers Rally.

The spectacle is quite amazing and really worth seeing. All proceeds go to charitable organizations in Roswell.

If you missed the Roswell event there will be three more hot air balloon rallies in New Mexico: One in September in Elephant Butte and two in October - the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and Mountain Balloon Rally in Taos.

128,000 ft Jump!

Everyone has limits. Not every one accepts them. - Felix Baumgartner

Everyone has limits. Not every one accepts them. - Felix Baumgartner

Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, aka Fearless Felix, jumped from the altitude of 128,097 feet around noon this Sunday, October 14, just outside of Roswell, NM, breaking several world records: highest free-fall, fastest free-fall, and highest manned balloon flight.

The free-fall lasted 4 minutes 22 seconds.

Although Baumgartner broke several world records today, he was unable to break Kittinger's free-fall record.

The Red Bull Stratos mission to the Edge of Space attempted to transcend human limits that had been set by Joseph W. Kittinger some 50 years ago.

The Red Bull Stratos team brought together the world's leading minds in aerospace medicine, engineering, pressure suit development, capsule creation and balloon fabrication. It included retired United States Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger, who holds three of the records Felix wanted to break.

Joe's record jump from 102,800 ft in 1960 was during a time when no one knew if a human could survive a jump from the edge of space. Joe was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and had already taken a balloon to 97,000 feet in Project ManHigh and survived a drogue mishap during a jump from 76,400 feet in Excelsior I. The Excelsior III mission was his 33rd parachute jump. This was the time he established a world record that remains unbroken to this day. Kittinger's free-fall lasted 4 minutes 36 seconds - 14 seconds longer than Baumgartner's.

 Felix Baumgartner in free-fall

Although researching extremes was part of the program's goals, setting records wasn't the mission's purpose. Joe ascended in helium balloon launched from the back of a truck. He wore a pressurized suit on the way up in an open, unpressurized gondola. Scientific data captured from Joe's jump was shared with U.S. research personnel for development of the space program. Today Felix and his specialized team hoped to take what was learned from Joe's jumps more than 50 years ago and press forward to test the limits of the human capacity.

Landed safely east of Roswell

Baumgartenr ascended to the low stratosphere in a capsule that was carried by a balloon which itself was a technological marvel.

The balloon was constructed of strips of high-performance polyethylene (plastic) film that was only 0.0008 inches thick or 10 times thinner than a lunch bag. In total, these strips would cover 40 acres if they were laid flat. Polyester-fibre reinforced load tapes were incorporated to do the weight bearing.

The Stratos balloon was filled with 30 million cubic feet of helium which10 times larger than Joe Kittinger's balloon in 1960.

The Roswell-jump not only terminated Baumgartner's skydiving career, but it also marked the 65th anniversary of US test pilot Chuck Yeager successful attempt to become the first man ever to officially break the sound barrier aboard an airplane.

The 65th UFO Festival in Roswell

The UFO 1947 crash site
 The UFO 1947 crash site

Like every year, the City of Roswell invites UFO enthusiasts and skeptics alike to join in the celebration of one of the most debated incidents in history. The three-day event will feature guest speakers, authors, an alien costume contest, an alien pet costume contest, an alien parade, and more. All that in a New Mexican heat of 1o6 °F.

The Roswell UFO Museum

65 years ago a UFO crashed on a ranch 30 miles north of Roswell. This event stirred a never ending controversy and gave birth to countless conspiracy theories.

Aliens embrace!

Interestingly enough, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) issued a statement claiming to have recovered a crashed "flying disk."  But after the Roswell Daily Record published a front page article about the event, RAAF changed its statement the next day and announced that the object was a mere  weather balloon and not a flying disk as  previously reported. This revised statement sparked immediate controversy. The eye witnesses were hushed up or simply ridiculed.

To this day many people around the world believe that there was a cover upon a grand scale.

And the winners are...
Winners in the kids' category

And while we may never learn the truth, we can at least have some fun. The festival lasts three days from June 29 till July 1.

The coolest bartender ever!

The Roswell UFO Museum organized a number of talks. One of the more interesting is probably one that will be given on Sunday by Freddy Silva - a serious researcher of the crop circle phenomenon. You will also have a chance to meet a nuclear researcher Stanton Friedman, scientific UFOlogist Kathleen Marden, and Kevin Randle who studied UFOs for forty years, among others. To find out more simply visit UFO Museum site.

Unexplained Cow Abductions in Roswell!

Every year around this time unusual things happen around Roswell. The precious Black Angus cows disappear en masse from the surrounding ranches. Some ranchers reported that they found their animals brutally mutilated. Organs were missing from the carcasses and strange, indecipherable markings have been made on the animals' necks.

Although no UFO sightings were registered in the area for quite some time, the locals suspect that their cows were victims of alien abduction and mischief. A witness who wished to remain anonymous remembers seeing some orbs in the sky on his way to Santa Fe.

Roswell is a very strange place. No one here was really alarmed when the entire Alien Parade disappeared last year from the Main Street. But the tasty, well nourished cows are an entirely different matter.

Should you be visiting Roswell at this time, do not wonder about the exorbitant steak prices at the local restaurants. The Black Angus is in short supply, but the demand is ever rising...

First Snow

Madame M.

I shuffle through the fresh new snow while strolling in the park,
Seeing shadows start to form as it is getting dark.
So quietly and peacefully new snowflakes hit the ground,
And form a pure white layer and they never make a sound.

The soft flakes feel like drops of ice when drifting on my face,
And everything feels fresh and clean as I walk through this place.
The trees are covered with a coat of freshly fallen snow,
Then some have icy branches that give off a crystal glow.

The only sound that I can hear is little wisps of wind,
But only for a moment then the air is still again.
My heart is overflowing with a feeling from within,
A gentle, soothing, calming feeling comes to me again.

From a poem "December Snow" by James A. Kisner

 Snow in Roswell, NM

It is really pretty out there. So much snow fell over night only two days ago. And it is very, very cold! The temperature dropped to average 6º F or -15º C, but at least it is sunny and nice.

Madam M. is not really interested in the landscape. She enjoys the warmth of the house. Agent Orange, on the other hand, loves adventures. Until only few days ago, he spent most of the nights outside. We have no idea what he was doing out there, but it was simply impossible to keep him indoors. Till the snow fell.

It was late in the evening and still snowing when Agent Orange gave his usual "concert". James opened the back door for him. What ensued was really comical. You could see an orange fur ball rushing like mad through the door. Suddenly the ball halted in its tracks in disbelief. Someone did something to his kingdom. He gave James an accusing look and hid under the table, sulking.

Few minutes later he was meowing at the front door, probably hoping that at least this part of his universe was still normal. When James opened the door, Agent Orange appeared even more confused. He wanted to check the backyard again and did not stop howling until James picked him up. Something was really wrong out there! What was that white thing? Who put it there? Everywhere!

Agent Orange, sulking

James decided to keep the confused cat indoors for a while. The cat almost resigned himself to his confinement. For one night! He either forgot about the snow, or simply wanted to explore it, because the next evening he insisted on going out.

Agent Orange is a very adventurous cat and it is almost impossible to keep him indoors. He was a baby alley cat when he moved in with us last year in October and has never seen the snow before.

He meows and howls if he doesn't get his way. He "must" go outside, even if it is for a few minutes only. Snow isn't as horrible as he first seemed to think.

We decided to keep an eye on him. It is simply too cold to allow him to spend the entire night in the bushes or wherever he desires to go.

The Truth About Roswell

Late for abduction?

Greatest cover-up ever!

For the first time since the alleged 1947 UFO crash near Roswell, NM, government officials are disclosing the truth about the event. It might be shocking to you, but the UFO never crashed near Roswell! Everything you have ever known about the Roswell Incident was simply a government cover-up.

The UFO did crash in 1947, but it was in Colorado, not in Roswell. People who witnessed the crash in the San Luis Valley disappeared without a trace.

To divert public interest from the site of the crash, responsible government agencies simply created a plausible myth and chose a far-away-in-the-middle-of-nowhere Roswell, NM, as the perfect spot to divert attention of the unsuspecting crowds. False information about the crash was disseminated as a maneuver to cover up the real events. Thus, the Roswell Incident was created, to a great dismay of the inhabitants of this quiet New Mexican town.

This would also explain the abundance of UFO sightings in Colorado and the incredible luck of such in New Mexico.

The people of Roswell always knew that there was no such thing as the UFO crash in the New Mexican desert, but no one really paid attention to what they said. Instead, conspiracy theories were formulated to explain the alleged government cover-op.

Now, more than half a century later, we are finally learning the truth about this 1947 UFO crash. We still need to find out what really happened to the captured crew of the space ship.

The Roswell citizens are officially relieved from the embarrassing duty of holding the Annual Alien Parades. After a mediocre act in 2010, no such parade took place this year. The few remaining gift stores on Main Street will go out of business in no time and the town will be able to reclaim its South-Western charm.

News From Roswell

The New Roswell Abduction Terminal

After more than two years of secrecy the Intergalactic Enterprises Inc. announced yesterday an opening of a new abduction terminal in Roswell, NM. Citizens of this legendary location were aware that something spectacular was taking place in the northern sector of the city, but due to the secrecy of the project no one actually knew what was being constructed behind a tall fence.

A representative of the company admitted that the IE Inc. wanted to be the first company to ever attempt such construction in the USA. Asked about the participation of Donald Trump and Richard Branson in the project, the young man declined all comments. However, he announced that the first abduction is scheduled for the April 15, 2011 - a day of the official inauguration of the terminal.

The city of Roswell will provide two shuttle services: one from the Roswell International Airport, the other, from the City Hall.

As of today the ticket price for the abduction is still unknown. The company informed us, however, that only one way tickets will be available.

My First Mission to Earth

The landing was more than rough. Our module fell apart upon the impact and I found myself thrown quite a distance from the spot we had designated for our landing. Our ships never malfunction, but there was something weird about this unfriendly area that confused the navigation. I remember Trnbxår screaming that the coordinates were right, but nevertheless, something went wrong. We crashed.
I was warned that the beings on this planet were rather hostile and might get strange ideas when they see us without a disguise. I would never forget the history lessons and the story of our unfortunate 85756th expedition to this strange planet. The crew was captured by a vicious crowd who later conducted crude experiments on their physical remains. Abominable!

I knew I had to find a disguise very quickly. I lurked behind a rock waiting for a proper suit donor to appear. A furry creature came out of nowhere apparently hunting for food in the tall grass. I saw how quick it was. I had to be even quicker if I wanted to wear that suit. I grabbed it, squeezed the creature out and slipped into its jumper without any delay. It felt a bit tight, but there was no time to look for another one. I made off quickly in search of the remaining crew.

The place looked somewhat familiar. I remembered the images that were shown to me at the Central Command. Nothing had changed here since the last landing. Time seemed to stand still on this funny planet. And funny it was! It was small and rushed like mad around its star. And it only had one moon. Can you imagine that? Really funny. Their entire solar system was like a joke.

I wondered around and found traces of habitation. I entered the perimeter and only an instant later saw two huge bipeds. They noticed me too. I immediately regretted my quick decision to slip into that small furry thing. But amazingly enough, the bipeds seemed less hostile than expected. Maybe they simply liked furry creatures. Imagine. They even gave me something to eat. It was disgusting! A slimy, smelly something. My crxnk would not even touch anything like that and they tried to feed it to me! My disguise, that is.

I must admit though that there was something special about these two bipeds. They looked friendly and seemed to like me. They even called me "Monster", whatever that meant. They invited me to their home. Not so quickly, you two! This might be a trap, I thought. One could not be too careful.

When no one was looking, I snicked in and quickly surveyed the living quarters of my chosen bipeds. They had an access to some very rudimentary communication technology. It looked like the primitive devices our ancestors used about six thousand years ago. And yet, this was better than nothing. I had to act fast. I could gain access to this machine if they trusted me enough to keep me in. I understood that I would have to endure all the fondling and scratching and even more of that atrocious food they were trying to feed me. But patience paid off. In no time I moved in and was allowed to sit next to their communication device. They seemed not to suspect anything.

My mission was very simple. We needed few more specimen as the ones that were recently captured perished long before the craft could reach the mother ship. We also had to take water and air samples, and extract some bone marrow and some brain tissue. These were needed for grafting experiments. Our school children created some hybrids and we wanted to see if they were compatible with the beings from this planet. We needed the air and water samples to recreate the exact atmosphere of the area.

I was charged with the singular honor to oversee the extraction process. The samples had to be immaculate or else they would contaminate the results of the experiment.

As I was told before my mission, the bipeds were very predictable. They followed a very weird but simple daily routine and left me mostly to myself. Their technology seemed to be completely useless so no wonder life on this planet was so archaic. But the beings seemed to enjoy it in their own strange ways. I only had to enhance their technology just a bit. This meant that I had to return to the place of impact. But most importantly, I had to find my crew. My locator signal was on. If anyone survived the impact, they would have no problem finding me.

As the time passed, more than one furry suit appeared on the porch of my new living quarters. I tried to communicate, but none of them happened to be my crew in disguise. It was annoying. I was patrolling the area and had to chase away every single one of them. Some even tried to mate with my suit! No one at home would ever believe me if I told them about the real dangers of my mission. Grrxxr! Just get me out of here!

Finally, Orvnxtu appeared wearing the most outrageous disguise. He heard my locator signal few days ago, but had a difficulty catching the suit he liked the most. It was as quick as mercury and slightly too small, but it had some advantages, he said. I could not stop laughing when I saw him. He was the color of a ripe nxœtår, but, unfortunately, smelled nothing like it.

My bipeds seemed to like him a lot and gave him the food I rejected. Orvnxtu moved in very quickly and genuinely enjoyed the food he was given. Yuck! But of course, he was more experienced than I. He traveled before and tried the strangest delicacies in all corners of the galaxy. For me, this was the first time and I guess, I wasn't adventurous enough.

Orvnxtu was very smart. He knew that his disguise would expand if he ate a lot. He suggested that I did, too. A bigger suit would be a blessing because my back was itching mercilessly, but I decided to keep things just the way they were. I was enhanced with the cornico-pathaeral gland and could synthesize my own nourishment. If I ate anything at all it was only to defer suspicion. I even begun to like my bipedal Earthlings and allowed them to touch and scratch my furry suit. They would make perfect toys for my crxnk, but this was only a dream since on my planet we were not allowed to keep the specimen to ourselves. Any specimen that survived became property of the Ministry of Science and this was good so.

By Dominique Allmon

This short story was inspired by two enchanted cats - Madame M. also known as the Monster, and Agent Orange. Madame M. is by no means an ordinary cat. She definitely  came from outer space. Agent Orange is the only creature that was allowed to set foot on our porch. Now they are plotting together, but Madame M. is definitely the commander in chief.

The Annual Roswell UFO Festival

By Joel Berliner

The Roswell UFO Festival starts as a search for extraterrestrial life, abounds with tales of mystery and imagination, uncovers a number of historic, artistic and cultural treasures and ends up like an old-fashioned Fourth of July parade, with all the warmth and genuineness of a real Main Street America, with a saucer-eyed twist.

Held every year over the Fourth of July holiday, it invites you to explore the most credible watershed event in the pantheon of UFO encounters, and it lets you discover another, deeper side of Roswell's prominence among science and the arts, American history, folklore and the story of the Old West and the modern age.

It all began at 11:45 p.m. July 4, 1947, when two alien spacecraft were alleged to have crashed over sheep farms just north and west of Roswell. Ranchers who were on the scene were extremely specific about what they saw, and newspapers reported that aliens had been removed from the wreckage of "flying saucers." Twenty-four hours later the official account changed radically: The incident was just an errant weather balloon, evidence was spirited away, stories were changed, threats were made, and the events at Roswell were a forgotten occurrence until the publication in the early '80s of "The Roswell Incident," complete with tales of alien autopsies and government cover-ups. The town was quick to capitalize on the publicity once the story re-emerged, and Roswell soon became ground zero for the full range of intellectual and commercial interest in alien visitation, which makes for a pretty fascinating destination.

As it turns out, there are two UFO festivals, simultaneous and largely coexisting: one by the city of Roswell and one by the originator of the event, the Roswell UFO Museum.

Both have panel discussions and special events, with this last year the city event featuring a concert by members of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead doing a medley of Paul Kantner's science fiction musical epics; the UFO Museum featured acclaimed actor Malcolm McDowell, of "Clockwork Orange" fame and much else, answering questions at length in a spirited public forum.

The fact that they are separate organizations and that their events overlap adds to the depth of offerings to explore when visiting Roswell and learning about the most notorious incident in modern times of alien visitation, how it came about and the incidental realities surrounding it.

The town itself is somewhat small, and the main activities are at the center of town, at Main and Second streets. This UFO Museum covers the wide ground of alien encounters, with extremely specific exhibits detailing every aspect of the Roswell Incident, from the crashes to the alien autopsies, military interference and threats, governmental cover-ups, disappearing nurses and the subsequent transfers of spacecraft and alien remains to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and then to Area 51 in Nevada.

Additional exhibits chart a string of alien encounters, alien abductions and a particularly interesting Mayan exhibit showing the ancient influence of alien visitation on art and hieroglyphics. To add spice, there is a recreation of the alien autopsy. Nestled on the streets around the UFO Museum are bookstores with publications on every conceivable aspect of UFO encounters and many T-shirt and souvenir shops, all amid a certain small-town quietude that bursts into activity with each UFO Festival.

The official town festival is at the Roswell Convention Center about a mile away. There, the branding of Roswell is in full swing, and close to a hundred kiosks inside the hall extol the likes of accounts of alien abduction, entertainment personalities with histories of science-fiction film projects, and the Virgin Galactic exhibit promoting the new age of commercial civilian travel into suborbital space from the Virgin Galactic Spaceport at Truth or Consequences, 100 miles away.

It is festive and well attended. Multiple food trucks provide sustenance (including the first-rate Bears Barbecue) and there are music and tongue-in-cheek alien costume contests. Lectures take place in the Roswell Museum and Art Center next door, and daily laser shows with space themes take place in the Goddard Planetarium.

It is at that museum next door that another aspect of Roswell unfolds, for Roswell has long been an artists' community, and the Roswell Museum holds an impressive collection of modern and period artists far out of proportion to its setting and location. Rooms with a serious collection of significant art and sculpture by artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Henriette Wyeth make this museum a joy to discover. The American Indian artifacts exhibit is equally fantastic, very detailed and beautifully organized. More than just a collection of costumes and weapons, it explains the life of the local Indian cultures and displays hundreds of artifacts, headdresses and historic objects to bring Native American culture to life.

The most impressive aspect of the museum, even more than the fabulous art, is Robert Goddard's rocketry garage and workshop reconstructed in its entirety, exactly as it looked, as well as an exhibit of the evolution of his rockets and the history of his scientific journey to greatness.

It is not well known that Goddard came to Roswell in the 1920s with a $25,000 grant from Charles Lindbergh to continue his studies in rocket science after being expelled from Boston for burning down a field, and he chose Roswell for its wide-open spaces and subsequent ability to proceed unobstructed. To wander through his original laboratory and see the rockets he built, by hand, is to discover a chapter of American history whose consequences and benefits we enjoy to this day.

When you add the confluences of Goddard, Los Alamos, Trinity and the Roswell Incident, as well as the SETI radio telescope project just west of the White Sands Missile Range (an official agency looking for radio signals from extraterrestrial life in the universe), we see a pattern of significance that careens from the historical to the astronomical to the surreal and back.

We are guided through the museum by dedicated docent and local scholar Andrew Cecil, whose 70 years in Roswell are a mark of the character and decency of the old-timers. He knows every aspect of each significant work of art, including detailed and fascinating lectures on a collection of modernist art with Indian themes. His knowledge of New Mexico history brings it to life. When we come around to discussing the Roswell Incident, he grows quiet, measuring his words and repeating what other old-timers told me many times during my visit. He knew the people involved, knew their families, and they weren't the type of people to make things up or create a hoax or seek publicity or make fools of themselves.

We take a tour of the important UFO-related locations with Roswell Tours, visiting the hangar where the spacecraft wreckage was taken at the old Air Force base that was once the home of America's first strategic (nuclear) bomber command, but also going past the nearby farm of Kentucky Derby winner Mine that Bird, and visiting the New Mexico Military Institute, a lovely prep school with distinctive castle walled architecture, where Roger Staubach attended high school and gained his first taste of football stardom before making the Dallas Cowboys "America's team."

On the Fourth of July the Roswell UFO festival reaches a climax with the alien costume contest and the Fourth of July parade. Many people in the crowd dress as aliens as well. Alien costume contest winners, floats and antique cars carrying distinguished guests move slowly along the street past throngs of visitors and local residents.

Even this doesn't encompass everything there is to explore about the Roswell area. Carlsbad Caverns is 100 miles south. The hill country west of Roswell holds a series of quaint towns, including Lincoln, where Billy the Kid made his home. When you add that on top of the Trinity test site, the Virgin Galactic Spaceport, the White Sands Missile Range, the Roswell Museum, the historic presence of Robert Goddard and the cultural impact of the Roswell Incident, you have a fascinating and compelling event in a lovely town.
